Maker Faire New York 2011

Officially announcing our return to the Big Apple.

Favorited Favorite 0

It's no big secret that we love Maker Faire. Back in May we attended Maker Faire in San Mateo, California and had an absolute blast meeting some our customers, conducting workshops, and checking out tons of cool projects. So we are happy to announce that we will be attending Maker Faire New York!

Maker Faire New York will take place on September 17th and 18th, 2011 at the New York Hall of Science. There will be tons of awesome exhibits and vendors, and once again we will be running several of our workshops (which ones, exactly, are still TBD). We are really excited to make another trip out to the Big Apple!

The Faire will run from 10 AM to 7 PM on Saturday and from 10 AM to 6 PM on Sunday, so make sure to stop by! You can buy tickets at the Maker Faire website or day of the event. Hope to see you out there!

Sparkfun, y u no Detroit Maker Faire?

    • We wish that we could - but it's just not feasible for us to go to every Maker Faire and the combination of San Mateo (May) and New York (September) work out well. Trying to do one in May, one in July, and one in September would be a little too much.

    • Zuph I was totally there! Working up a news post about it. Look for it this week.

Cool! Hope you were able to stop by our balloon, floating up and down in front of the Civil War stuff. Plenty of Sparkfun stuff danging off, ready to cross the Atlantic.

You know you guys sound like you need to make a division of Sparkfun that just goes to the different Make fairs. That's their sole job. Yes, it has ties to the education department of Sparkfun, and Yes other parts of Sparkfun can join in. But this division could be the mobile arm of Sparkfun- maybe having a van/trailer that’s dedicated with all the things you need to have to go to a make fair with (including the Sparkfun’s vending machine/tables/soldering irons/kits/ect.). I know it sounds silly, but I could see it being Sparkfun's evangelism, just like Microsoft has their person spreading their message about software {And YES, Microsoft calls their person their “software evangelist”}, I could see this group spreading the message about all the cool things that Sparkfun does and is part of. It’s Sparkfun’s mobile PR department, with the goal of bringing the world to Sparkfun.

I'll be there, I've got a table for myself and my FPV tank. Hopefully going to find some of the Let's Make Robots people.

Are there any Faires planned for Europe? (Hint England, Netherlands, Germany or Hungary would be nice)

Purchased my tickets last week; so very excited!
Oh, and this year -- Could we try to bring some SMD kits? :D I was a bit sad last year to find out there were only PTH kits available.

From previous experience we've decided not to offer SMD soldering at Maker Faire but there will be new kits that weren't offered last year! Hope you'll drop by and check it out!

    • Don't worry Sam... New York Maker Faire is a regular September event. It'll be back next year too, and we'll be there. =)

Will the this both be free? What exactly do you do ?

    • We run workshops - in the past we have had soldering kits (like the Simon PTH Kit or the ClockIt Kit) and e-textiles (the TechStyles Kit). We ask for a donation to participate and give the proceeds to local charities.
Our booth also serves just as a place to meet with our customers and talk shop. We usually bring a few projects with us as well.
