SparkFun Inventor's Kit for Arduino with Retail Case

Replacement:RTL-11022. The new SIK comes with the Arduino Uno R3 and a new motor. This page is for reference only.

This is the 'retail' version of the SparkFun Inventor's Kit (SIK). This version comes with the carrying case seen in the pictures, where the standard version does not. You can buy the case separately though if you wish.

zOMG! This kit has it all. It now includes the new Arduino Uno, the fabled baseplate, and all the sensors you can shake a stick at. This version includes a plastic carrying case to organize all the components. The SparkFun Inventor's Kit for Arduino is a box of goodies to get the very beginner started with programmable electronics. It includes all the bits you need to build 12 basic circuits, no soldering required! On top of that, we've joined forces with Oomlout to offer a small booklet to get you started. The SIK comes with everything pictured and a 36 page color printed 'starter' guide. The guide will take a complete novice and get them:

  • Blinking LEDs
  • Controlling a toy motor
  • Controlling a servo
  • Making (bad) music
  • Responding to buttons
  • Twisting a volume knob
  • Detecting ambient light
  • Reading temperature
  • Controlling big devices
  • Mixing LED colors

We believe these to be the building blocks of any electronics project. Once these concepts are mastered, very impressive projects are possible using simple recombinations.

Note: No soldering required. We recommend this kit for beginners ages 10 and up.

Note: This product is a collaboration with Oomlout. A portion of each sales goes back to them for product support and continued development.

The case could be better... It broke first time I opened it. Otherwise excellent kit! Thanks Sparkfun!

Me too :) I broke one of the 4 things that holds the box,

Yep great kit. Broke the case on first use.

Same here. Carefully released latches on front, opened the lid back so I could see... POP ...huh? Oh, it's NOT a hinged lid? There's another pair of #*!%#!! latches on the back! :-(

Same here. This case really needs to be redesigned. It broke before I even got a glimpse into what was inside.

i feel better you wrote that because i did the same thing.

Has this kit been updated to include the Arduino UNO R3?

  • Zio / about 13 years ago / 1

Just got my 2nd kit today, great stuff! Almost broke the lid trying to open the case though. I think 4 silicon bumpers on the bottom of the arduino/breadboard holder would be a nice touch ;)

Will this kit work with a Mac?

When is theh SparkFun Inventor's Kit for Arduino with Retail Case going to be available.

  • Member #234680 / about 13 years ago / 1

Hey, I tried to modify this code http://ardx.org/src/circ/CIRC06-code.txt to include an A#. I found the frequency, and then the 'timehigh' required for the note, and I changed the char names [] and int tones [] to include the a#, and I changed the for{} below to go up to 9. However, I am still getting an error, which I do not understand. Can anyone help?

Wow, the Arduino inventor's kits really do sell out fast. I am sure glad that I placed my order when I did. I placed my order about 1am on June 10, 2011 when it said that there were 46 of the inventor's kits with retail cases left in stock. It is now 5pm here on June 10, 2011. Oh cool!!! I just now received the email notification that my order has shipped, right on!!!!!!

The kit doesn't come with a temperature sensor.

    • It actually does come with the TMP36 IC for temperature sensing. If you received a kit without one, please let either customer service or tech support know and we can get you a replacement.

Does this kit possibly come with the SMD liek the one without that case? If so, this page should also have the note that the other pages have.

    • At this time the kit is shipping with the Arduino UNO PTH board. It does not contain the SMD board, and so the pictures, and description above is correct. Thanks

    Great kit!!! poor case though.

When will this be in stock? Same for the kit without the box...

  • viscousflow / about 13 years ago / 1

Sold out, when will be back in? I'm anxious to get this kit so I can learn micro controllers over the summer.

I just got this kit and so far it's been great! I had no problems with the case and everything seems to be in order.
I do have a comment and a question however. The 3rd example/tutorial seems to have some issues. The overlay card and the manual don't match up. Even in the downloadable 36 page pdf file linked here on the product page the printed card shown in circuit 3 doesn't match up with what it's telling you to do (The blue and purple cables on the card aren't in the physical depiction, the diode is placed differently, there's a huge white thing in the middle, and a number of other differences). This confused me for a long time until I threw the overlay card out and went by the manual.
Finally, I'm wondering what the purpose of the diode is in this example. It seems out of place and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's needed.
    Thanks!

    • urjaman / about 13 years ago / 1

Diode is needed to surpress the voltage spike caused by the coil(s) in the motor from damaging the transistor when you stop the motor.

  • dpgol88 / about 13 years ago / 1

How come this kit is out of stock but the case and the kit without the case are available?

  • dpgol88 / about 13 years ago / 1

Any estimates regarding the re-availability of the kit?

  • Defo / about 13 years ago * / 1

Heads up on the Flex sensor. Be sure to add strain relief between the attached backing and the pins to immobilize that section. My conductive layer cracked and flaked at that point after a VERY short time while using this in the supplied breadboard.

Does this kit come with the surface-mount version of the ATmega328 on the Arduino board or is it the standard pin-type?

  • Noobixide / about 13 years ago / 1

Should have bought it when i saw it back in stock!

  • Defo / about 13 years ago / 1

Do the new kits really have 1N4001 diodes? The description says yes, but your customer service says no.

    • Miscommunication on our part. Our apologies. The part listing has been corrected. These kits are shipped with 2 1N4148 diodes, not 1N4001s. Thanks for bringing it our attention!
