USB to Serial and 18V Power for the MCP

Replacement: None. It's time for this product to step aside and make room in the catalog for even more cool stuff. This page is for reference only.

This is a neat little product from Olimex. The PIC-MCPUSB is an adapter for the PIC-MCP MPLAB compatible programmer. It generates all necessary power supply and RS232 signals for PIC-MCP from any USB port. This way desktops, laptops, tablets, etc, without an RS232 port can use the PIC-MCP and MPLAB.

The really neat thing is that the PIC-MCPUSB is not limited to the PIC-MCP. It may be used as power supply source +18VDC/100mA and an additional RS232 port on any computer with a USB interface. Installs as any other USB device and shows up as a standard COM Port (COM3 for example).

This unit does not work with the PIC-PG1 or PIC-PG2.

Adapter has a female USB 'A' connector. Any USB Male to Male A/A cable should work with your platform.

Based on the popular FTDI USB Chip. Drivers are currently available for most platforms including:

  • 2x1.6" (50x40mm)

Pros: Excellent product! I use it to power a 12V gadget and talk RS232 to it. Had to change one resistor to get it to generate 12V instead of 18V.<br />
Cons: Needs semi-standard USB cable (male A to male A). A/B cable would have been more convenient.
