GM862 Cellular Quad Band Module with GPS

This is the latest technology available to the M2M (Machine-to-Machine) market. The GM862-GPS combines the powerful GSM engine of the GM862 with a SiRF III 20-channel high sensitivity GPS receiver. Call up the module, issue the GPS query command, and you'll have NMEA data! If this unit is within range of a cellular tower, you'll know where it is within 9 meters anywhere on the surface of the earth.
The GM862-GPS includes all the technology of the previous modules including a python script interpreter, and quad band cellular capabilities (850/900/1800/1900MHz frequencies). Now you can harness all the power of the GM862 without the need for an external microcontroller. Simple Python programs can be loaded onto the GM862 controlling the GPIOs and issuing global cellular commands. Pin compatible module with upgraded internal memory for user programs.
You will need to provide a SIM card. Pull the SIM card from your phone, insert it into the module, and voila, you are making calls under your cellular account. Works with all providers currently supporting SIM cards (AT&T, T-Mobile, and Cingular).
The GM862 module is controlled via AT commands. This means all you have to do is send a string of serial characters such as "ATD 3035551234" and the module will place a call. No fuss, no mess. Once the module has connected to another module or modem, a serial connection is made and data can be transferred as simply as passing and receiving serial strings through the module.

Why is this GPS/GSM module not being sold anymore?
After developing an application with this module, I'd like to buy another one. Is there a newer replacement for this product? If not, where might I get another unit?

I bought the USB evaluation kit and can communicate with HyperTerminal. The device accepts my pin and such but shows it as unregistered; AT+CREG? response is 0,3.
I am using a sim from a TracFone that I got for this purpose. Has anyone had success using a TracFone sim or ideas what to do to fix?

and enter the IMEI Number that is listed on the module or Modem, and the site will tell you if you can connect to Telus.
Teh IMEI number on the Telit GM862-GPS unit is

Entering this number, the response is

Your device will not work on our network.
So donot purchase this if you intend to be connected to the Telus network in Canada
I would like to see all the Cell Phone modules listed with their IEMI numbers, then we as consumers would be able to make the correct decisions. I now have a modem module that I cannot use.
I just recived this GM862 module, and have to warn other Canadians who might purchase this. The only service provider for this GSM modem in Canada is Rogers. We tested two SIM Cards from Telus, and we could not get onto their system.
Can I use this module with a carrier in Finland such as Elisa or DNA?

Can I just import antigravity if I want to use this in a high altitude balloon project?
Cool module. Glad that this one includes GPS as well, it saves us a step.
This module will work in mexico?? is "unlocked" for working with all cellular companies?? like telcel??
All M2M modems "should" work on all networks, the module itself is not bound by any network tie-ins like a regular mobile phone can be. Telit are a fairly large concern and will probably have all the required FCC, PTCRB, etc. but remember, if you take this OEM module and make a new product with it, and then sell it, you will need to get new FCC, SARS, EMC, PTCRB etc testing done otherwise your device will be illegal, OHH THE JOY of mobile comms :)

I am a beginner with m2m modules. I needed a clarification whether i can interface this quad with gps module with a bluetooth module using an external micro-controler?
Reading the datasheet, the gain spec for a GPS antenna should be "1.5 dBi < Gain < 4.5 dBi". All of the antennas I've seen here appear to have a much higher gain than this. Am I missing something?
Is it required to have the external antenna hooked up to it? Or can it acquire a fix decently enough without?
Who are you guys using for service? Are there any dirt-cheap M2M plans (occasional data use, low priority) that don't require a huge fleet worth of devices to buy into? Or are there any hackers who'd be interested in a group-buy of GPRS service to bring costs down? Or is everyone just popping their T-mo or Deathstar sim into these and using their regular voice plan?

i noticed the module has to be set to the appropriate bandwidth (at#bnd=) 1 for north america and 0 for europe, my question is, does australia share the same band as north america, europe or other? The band is set via serial?

What are the chances of making this into an anti-theft tracking device that could be placed in a trail camera, power tool, or other high-value items with minimal concealment space?
Access to the GM862 Support Forum requires one to be a Round Solutions customer? Any other suggested support forums?
Does anyone know of a Arduino Shield for this? I heard that libelium made a batch of shields, but no longer has them.

After going to the TELIT site and checking the links to their distributors, I noticed that they are selling this version for $140. I realize that you're in the business to make money, but is this markup realistic?
After all the work we've done with the GM862 modules over the years, Telit doesn't like us very much. We don't have a very good margin. I hope we can save you some on the cables and breakout boards.
