Bluetooth SMD Module - SparkFun

Replacement: None. We don't have a direct replacement for this product. It has been discontinued. Check out our other Bluetooth SMD modules. This page is for reference only.

The SparkFun Bluetooth® module is a module designed to replace serial cables. The Bluetooth® stack is completely encapsulated. The end user just sees serial characters being transmitted back and forth. Press the 'A' character from a terminal program on your computer and an 'A' will be pushed out the TX pin of the Bluetooth® module.

This new module from SparkFun uses the BGB203 IC from NXP. The BGB203 is a powerful IC with a flexible AT command set.

Please note: The SparkFun BGB203 based module will be replacing the phased-out Mitsumi module. The new BGB203 has a lower cost and a more robust AT command set. The shape, size, and pinout of this module is the same as the Mitsumi part. The only difference between the two modules is the SparkFun module has an active low output for the Status pin.

  • UART Data rates up to 1Mbps
  • Low power sleep mode
  • Compatible with all Bluetooth products that support SPP (almost all do)
  • 3.3V operation
  • Status pin
  • Bluetooth v1.2 compatible
  • Class 1 power output

So I've got my module and I'm reading your docs and I haven't found which pins I need to hook up... The Dimensional has a nice picture but doesn't label the pads and the Schematic has a nice schematic but doesn't show me physically which pins are which. What to do... There are 24 pads along the sides, but the Schematic shows pads up to 29 - probably those extra pads not along the sides. Still no clue which goes where, tho. I suppose the schematic showing "FP" means something like Flat Pack where I could dereference those numbers? Gosh, still puzzled... I wish I could read a good old fashioned data sheet for this module.

Just soldered mine onto a board - first time I've hand soldering something without leads, but after tinning the board a using some flux I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to solder.
Note that the connectors down the edge seem to be more like 47mil pitch, rather than the 45mil stated in the the dimensional document above.
Now just need to work out how to change baud rate...

Might we have recommended pads for this module?

    Hello eveyone ,
Can someone tell if I can use this module without a microcontroller. I want to use it as an adapter with the ID-12 rfid reader(TTL output ) , so that i send the data from the reader directly to a PDA.
    Thanks in advance

I'm also having a hard time finding the pinout for this breakboard! WRL-08461 has figures show it is using BGB203; and so is its description. BUT the schematic showed it's actually a RN41SMD which is a different product from Roving Network. wrl-08550 is another product that actually uses RN41. This is really confusing because I don't know which one is for which. It would be nice if sparkfun just include a pinout in this page.

  • Hello Everyone. Here are a few key points to help you out with this module.
First off here is a very useful link: This is the user guide for the Philips BGB203

    http://www.robotshop.ca/PDF/BGB203_SPP_UserGuide.pdf

SL: _There is more documentation under this part WRL-08461. It's basically the SMD mounted on a breakout board. The breakout board has all of the pins listed.

    _

Great addition. Thank you for mentioning that

ROBOSTEAL: Caution: the dimensional drawing linked on this page as of 2009.5.9 does NOT reflect the parts shipped by SparkFun.

The part has not changed nor been modified. I apologize that you may be experiencing issues with your foot print. However I would recommend contacting Sparkfun Technical Support prior to posting up a disclaimer.
Neither the part or documentation have been modified. Hope this helps you guys out.
    Thanks!

Can you make a part for this in the eagle library.

How to take the bluetooth module to "Command Mode" ?
Is it possible via bluetooth connection in "Hyper Terminal" ?
    Thanks
