Card Reader - SD/microSD/MMC/XD

**Replacement: **COM-10993. We're carrying a new card reader so this one is going away. This page is for reference only.

This is a basic card reader that supports many different formats. We found ourselves needing the ability to read SD cards while working with our various logging projects. We figured if we needed this, you might too!

Reader comes with short (3') miniUSB cable and works with Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Card reader may look slightly different from photographs.

    i got a reader like this looking exactly the same for £1 at the pound store. Cheap and gives me lots of errors

    Mine doesn't have a Micro Sd card slot.
    It doesn't really bother me but if you are looking for a microSD reader : BE CAREFUL.
    Funny thing is that it has the microsd reader footprint on the pcb but nothing attached to it.

    Update: Well, I went to put in a MS card and it wouldn't go in. I ended up popping the plastic covers apart and looking at the MS socket. The pins had gotten bent somehow and I wasn't able to fix it. Bottom line, don't bother with this card reader. Spend a little more and get something that might last longer. Sorry SparkFun but I know you didn't make this product.
    @ Staryn. I think your problem is that the card is write protected, not the reader. Try opening up the properties tab, there should be an option in there to get rid of the write protect.

    The one I purchased does not write on WinXP. When you attempt to write to it or format the SD card it says that it is Write Protected. I have looked around for where to change that but have been unsuccessful so far. This is real bummer because I really need to write to this card right now. Any suggestions?

    Just a word of warning for those looking to get this reader. Although the description states that it works for Compact Flash, it doesn't have a socket that will even fit a CF card! It has the pads for a CF connector on the PCB but it has a SD card socket placed there instead. I've tested the reader with the following cards: SD, microSD, Memory Stick PRO Dou and M2. I did buy it specifically for use with CF cards so that part is a bit disappointing but it works great with everything else I need it for. As a positive bonus, it came in bright green! :)

    It's a freaking paper weight.
    Doesn't work under linux, not using a hub, plugged
    directly into PC.
    Doesn't take XD cards, even though the description says it does.
    Don't waste your money,linux users anyway.
    Windows users may have better luck.
    Very disappointed.

      Feel I must do a bit of recanting.
      After several re-boots the card is now working under
      my Ubuntu box.
      Why it took several re-boots I can't say. however i'm still disappointed that it doesn't take XD cards.
      I suggest you remove XD from the supports section.
      The reader I received is a translucent sort of green color, It has NO XD slot.
      Unless SFE meant microXD. In any case you should change the description.

    Just to confirm- In addition to reading, this device can also write to SD cards, correct? I'm trying to prep an SD card to get started with my Beagleboard, and I've found that my old memory card reader is read-only (I'm sure the card is not write protected- can read/write from a friend's laptop).
    Wanting to make sure before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

      Well the one in the picture is a reader/writer but the product description says "Card reader may look slightly different from photographs". I think it would be safe to assume that it writes though.

    Do these work with SDHC, or just sd? It won't be very helpful if it doesn't do HC cards...

    I purchased one. It does not work as on Windows XP it is reporting a PnP ID of VID_0000&PID_0000. This is clearly an invalid value. When installed it (as expected with this ID) becomes an Unknown device.
    Help would be appreciated otherwise its another paper weight.

      It was plugged into a hub. The hub works with many devices, including USB 2.0 devices so I think the hub ok. When I plug it directly into the computer and bypass the hub, it reports a PnP ID of VID_058F&PID_6366. This is recognized as a mass storage device and things seem to work. So I am left to conclude that it is likely a timing issue in the reader. I cannot rule out the hub either but it is used a lot and for many different devices and without issue until this device. SOOO I am working if a little less flexibly than I would like.
