These are standard screws with 4-40 thread, but they're extraordinarily long - 1.25"!

    Cut the screw with the nut screwed in deeper than the cut line. Having a few nuts screwed in will make it easier to hold the screw in a bench vise (without damaging the threads). Unscrewing the nut after the cut knocks off the burrs.

    Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy these, and cut them down to size instead of buying the shorter screws?

      yes but be careful when you cut them because the nut might not fit because it could have burrs on it
