The ADXRS MEMs gyroscope from Analog Devices is a great sensor for detecting angular rate. This is the bare IC. The BGA package is tricky to solder, so we offer a breakout board below.

It's a BGA but all the signals are on the outside. All you need is a single sided board & a way to heat it.
The description's "this miniature breakout board" seems inconsistent with the pictures of just the bare chip.
