i’m sure anyone with enough expertise to shop directly from either sparc OR sparkfun would be well aware of the distinction between the two.
to the general public, any theoretical confusion is irrelevant, since they wouldn’t be in the position to make such a distinction in the first place.
all in all, it seems like a bad case of lawyers following their flow charts

if you just need to get some pretty lights blinking (for an art project or something), and you find these tutorials overwhelming (even though they’re awesome (!!)), you may want to start with an arduino programmer instead:

you can also find these or similar in discarded computer cases; generally there’s one connecting each of the pc speaker, power led, and hdd led to the motherboard
while you’re plundering, dont forget to grab the cmos battery :]
