One of the reasons SparkFun is such a fun place to shop is that they are willing to go out on a limb and try new and weird stuff, even if it will piss some people off.

Personally, I didn’t think this Free day was too much fun, so only tried a few times, but I keep coming back to SparkFun’s site because there’s always something novel, and a lot of it is appealing.

It took a lot of reloading just to answer two quiz questions, but it was fun and felt festive.
If you found it frustrating, why not just go do something else? Nobody I know of was forced to participate in free day.
