SparkFun Inventor's Kit For LabVIEW

Installing your LabVIEW SIK

Now that you have your Labview SIK it is time to get started. If you don't have a Labview SIK, check out the product page to find out more about the Labview SIK and find out how to order one. If you'd like to start playing the following directions will get you through the installation of the 45-day trial version as well, then just add your serial number when you get your kit.

Step 1: Download and install Labview

  • First we need to go to the Labview Product Page to download the Labview software. You can also just click here if you'd rather just do a direct download.
  • Next you will need to run the file, this will run it through a self extractor and run an installer. Follow the prompts and insert your serial number when prompted. The installation process should take about 10 minutes. Note: Your Labview SIK does come with a EULA, but there are 2 additional licence agreements for Labview and 2 for Silverlight in the installation process.

Step 2: Download and install NI-VISA

  • Next we need to install NI-VISA. Again you can just click here for a direct download.
  • You will need to run the file, this will run it through a self extractor and run and installer. Follow the prompts, if you tell it to trust NI and install drivers your screen may go black for a few seconds when installing drivers. The installation process should take about 5 minutes. Note: Your Labview SIK does come with a EULA, but there are 2 additional licence agreements for NI-VISA in the installation process.
  • You may need to restart your computer a few times at this point.

Step 3: Head over to Makerhub and
install LINX and your Sparkfun Redboard.

  • NI has added the procedures for installing LINX and your hardware in this tutorial. Just follow along.
  • You will start by downloading the package manage. Next you will download LINX (direct download) and install it through the package manager. Note: You will need to make a free account to download the package manager
  • Next you will install the drivers for the Redboard and install the LINX code onto the Sparkfun Redboard.

Step 4: Start playing

  • Next we can head over to Makerhub and start going through the tutorials. We can skip the first 2 since they are an overview of the components in the kit and the LINX install that we covered in step 3.
