Driver for the Mac seems to be outdated (released in 2018, prior to Mac arm architecture!). For M1, I was only able to upload a sketch after downloading driver from http://www.wch-ic.com/downloads/CH34XSER_MAC_ZIP.html per AdaFruit forums

Thank you for the information. As noted on the Drivers (If You Need Them) section, the archived drivers that we host in this tutorial for Mac OSX are from 7/4/18:

      Mac (ZIP) : Driver v1.5 (2018-07-04)

To download the latest drivers, we do provide a link to the CH340 driver downloads page of the WCH website (links to the Mac and Linux drivers are on that page).

I'm having problems getting the CH340 to work reliably. I can write to it without a problem...but after a number of isolated writes, the chip locks up and acts as if it's not there. I have to disable the port in order to get it to come back up. I've tried older and newer drivers, to no avail. Any ideas?
