Behold: Our Electrify Your Prom Winners!

Everyone who entered totally rules, but there could be only three who took home the prizes.

Favorited Favorite 2

First and foremost, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who entered the contest! We ended up with a lot of entries, and we were impressed with the work that went into all of them! If you were here, we'd throw confetti at you and cheer your names at an embarrassing decibel. Now, the moment you've been waiting for (drumroll) - the winners of the SparkFun Electrify Your Prom contest are:

1st Place: Avery Brock

Avery is a high school senior who made a two-part entry consisting of an LED tie and an LED matrix suit pocket insert. Avery's projects showed a lot of thought put into the design and implementation of the electronics for ease of access to turn them on or repair them if needed. His video had a ton of documentation and very clearly labeled what was going on with all the parts, as well as demonstrations of them in action.

Awesome work, Avery! You've won either a Phantom 1 Drone or $500 in SparkFun credit!

2nd Place: Gregory Evans

Gregory built a light-up bowtie that actually won him the "Best Dressed" award at his prom! We loved all the work he put into designing different, interesting modes for the bowtie's LEDs. He had very clean and well-designed integration of the LEDs into the pattern of the tie, as well as the casing for the controller on the back of the tie, and his parts and prototyping process were very well documented!

Congratulations Gregory, you're the proud new owner of our Electric Arts Wishlist, or $250 in SparkFun credit to spend on whatever you want!

3rd Place: Jude Al-Mutlaq

Jude, who had never worked with electronics before, made her dress (from scratch!) and programmed it to look like Katniss's "girl on fire" dress from The Hunger Games. Jude put a lot of thought into the design of the entire dress and how to incorporate the 'fire' effects into it. Beautiful work for a first project!

High-five, Jude! You're the winner of a Kinoma Create or $150 in SparkFun credit!

The decisions were not easy ones, and we loved all of your entries! Here is a glimpse into our other entries, and thank you again to everyone who entered! We'll be contacting the three winners soon to arrange prizes!

Al-Mutlaq - that name sounds familiar...

Also, the image slideshow with images of different vertical sizes - makes reading the page below the slideshow unbearable - everything jumping around every time the slideshow increments.

Yep! Sarah's sister entered the contest on her own. Don't worry, Sarah wasn't one of our judges, and the judging was done blindly without names attached. We wanted to show off all the projects that were submitted, but we couldn't control the orientation of people's images, so there was bound to be some inconsistency - sorry it's causing frustration!

Ahh, but did she purchase her Sparkfun components at full retail, or did she get a discount or free?

      • Please adjust them to have the same vertical size instead of the same horizontal size. That would fix the issue.

I agree with Erazmus' comment. I'm sorry to see that my entry's photo makes the website layout change in some browsers... If you want to see the dress in action, please check out the following videos:

Thanks for your kind words. I'm happy to see that, even if I wasn't one of the top 3, my videos have even more views than the winners' combined, which is something!
