Hello and welcome back to your Friday Product Post! Today we're announcing a special giveaway happening next week, in honor of the season of all things blinky! From Monday, 11/16 through Friday, 11/20, we're adding a free bag of LEDs to every customer order*! Now let's see what we have for you this week.

Last week we introduced our new Thing board, which means we're essentially carrying Thing 1 and Thing 2. Well guess what? We continue with the Dr. Seuss references this week. So the question is: Do YOU like green eggs and ham?

Thank you, SAM-I-am!

Based off of the Arduino Zero, the SparkFun SAMD21 Dev Breakout is an Arduino-sized breakout for the Atmel ATSAMD21G18, a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ processor with 256KB flash, 32KB SRAM, and an operating speed of up to 48MHz. The SAMD21 is compatible with the Arduino IDE, and libraries for the Arduino Zero.

The SparkFun SAMD21 Mini Breakout functions in the same way as it's relative seen above, just in Pro Mini-sized layout! Functionally these two boards offer the same things but if you need to save on space or just prefer working with smaller boards this Mini Breakout will be perfect for you!

Well, That is everything we have for this week. We know there isn't a ton to show for this week but rest assured that it only means we're planning something big. The only way to find out what big thing we are working on is to check back next week. We are sure it will shape up to be a pretty nice Friday. We'll see you then!

*Giveaway available from 11/16/2015 to 11/20/2015. Sorry guests, distributors, educators, and international customers, this promotion is for domestic customer accounts only. This giveaway will not apply to gift card orders. One LED bag per order with no exceptions. While supplies last.

Hmmm. Describing the SAMD21 as being the newest version of the Atmega328 seems a tad misleading. About the only thing they have in common are that they're made by Atmel. They have a completely different and incompatible CPU core, a different set of peripherals that's not going to be compatible with existing libraries, and you can't use the SAMD21 with 5V shields and accessories designed for the Atmega328 without frying it. Arguably it's less suitable as an upgrade than some of the non-Atmel, non-Arduino boards which are not just compatible with the Arduino IDE, but also have 5V tolerant I/O and are supported by a bunch of third-party libraries.

Yup. This is a really nice board, and it absolutely has a place in the market. A low-cost alternative to the Arduino Zero that is a great introduction to the ARM world. But you guys/gals missed the boat on how to sell it. Atmel's ARM chips are not the next versions of AVRs. ARM is a completely different world, but one that advanced hobbyists really need to be moving toward. Also, by selling it without headers, you just made it a breakout. That limits the audience that will consider it. Why not take your awesome board, put headers on it, populate the DC jack, think of a good name, figure out how to describe it correctly, and really make an impact in the hobbyist ARM world?

I looked at the product pages for the "sam" boards. You don't know how to spell "schematic"!
