School's In Session

Announcing a few upcoming classes!

Favorited Favorite 0

Although it can be fun when the weather gets warm to shut down your brain, summer doesn't necessarily mean you have to stop learning - it just means you can choose things that are more fun. With that in mind, we have a few upcoming classes to announce.

The first is for all those interested in E-Textiles - our Introduction to LilyPad class. This class, taking place at 6 PM on June 9th, will guide users through the basics of the LilyPad system - a development platform that makes adding electronics to your clothing a breeze. All you need to bring is yourself and your imagination (and maybe a bite to eat). This class has become very popular, so sign up early!

The next class is probably our most popular - Introduction to Arduino. From 10 AM - 5 PM on June 12th, you will spend all day learning the ins and outs of the Arduino platform as our swarm of skillful instructors guide you through experiments of various difficulty. You'll leave with a basic understanding of embedded electronics and the know-how to start your own projects.

Lastly, at 6 PM on July 14th, we'll be holding our Soldering Stenciling Class. This class will guide you through the process of using solder paste to connect components to a PCB. This is a really useful thing for those projects that have a whole bunch of fine-pitch parts. In the process, you'll create your very own Arduino Pro (which you'll get to take home). Hope to see you at SparkFun headquarters for one (or all three) of these classes!

Iv'e noticed in previous classes you have said a live feed/videos of the class will be created so will it happen in these classes? Its a shame i live in the UK and can't come to them :/

It looks like the class materials are already available as kits, so maybe SF could add a way to access pre-recorded classes with the purchase of a particular kit?

Should be "School's in Session" - awesome though. That solder stenciling class looks cool.

    • Argh - should be fixed now.
      Thanks!

We are such a community of Grammar Nazis

Couldn't it be "grammar perfectionists" just once?
And, by the way, I don't think "grammar" should be capitalized, and you forgot a period.

Shut up, or I'm gonna shoot you with a cudgel.

              I think you mean 'Shut-up.'
Also, did anyone else notice that he grew facial hair in the middle of the video?

              • This has become one of my favorite threads in a very long time.
And yes, using solder paste DOES make you more manly, hence the instant facial hair growth. ...blah blah blah [insert dated Chuck Norris meme] blah blah blah... so use solder paste or your bananas will turn brown.

                Never end a sentence with a preposition. It's "shut-up-a-your-face."

          • Actually, capitalization and periods fall under punctuation, not grammar.
            ZING!

What do you guys use for caching? Memcached? Nice.

I would really like to try this, but I'm a little concerned with the safety aspect...
Will I also grow instant facial hair after applying my solder paste? Because it would suck if I have to shave after every paste application.

Consuming a tin/lead alloy paste does put "hair on your chest" and potentially your face. Using Nitrile or latex gloves for application and adequate ventilation around your re-flow device should keep you safe.

    • Yes, it does indeed! In fact, Sam Elliot applies an even coat, with a putty knife like in the video, every morning. That's what keeps it shiny and grey.
Paradoxically, solder paste makes an excellent shaving cream. It even sharpens you razor as you use it!

this is pretty interesting, not to mention relevant
    article

don't be so cynical! we got media attention so enjoy it!

Nice article, but I don't like when the media tries to interfere with the electronics and software development communities. News is entertainment. We shouldn't allow the community to turn into an object of entertainment.

more likely a character encoding issue... maybe sparkfun isn't doing the best job converting user comments to the proper character encoding?

My guess is that they're both misquoted and attributed to the wrong person. But someone smart almost certainly said something like that at least once. :)
