SparkFun Heading to Maker Faire New York!

If you see us out at Maker Faire in New York City, come say hi!

This weekend, September 29 and 30, is the World Maker Faire in New York City. The faire runs from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. While we won't be having a booth this time around, there will be a small contingent of SparkFun redshirts milling around the faire, checking out cool new projects, networking with like-minded hackers, and generally gathering inspiration.

Just another day at Maker Faire.

So if you are heading out to New York for Maker Faire or the Open Hardware Summit, be on the lookout for SparkFun people and come say hi! Hope to see you there!

  • Awesome!! talked to someone from sparkfun a while back who informed me of this!!! Thanks!! I'll be there too!! If anyone see's me, I should be easily recognizable--I'll be wearing a t-shirt that says "Not Some Kid" that should be lighten up--I have pretty bright blonde hair too--I am a male as well (that's probably implied...)!! Can't wait to see everyone!!! I've heard rumor as well that Pete will be there too!! Can't wait!!! (I should be there saturday, but not sunday :-/ ) If you see me, I'm open to hi's and a few waves--and high fives..... See y'all there!!

    It's too bad Sparkfun won't have a booth. I was looking forward to meeting some of the people who feed my habit.

    Why does the "New Products" preview tab, that is always under the search box on the SparkFun news/homepage never show the NEWEST products?

    • It pulls up a pseudorandom subset of the 20 most recently available things (cached for 5 minutes or so). Here's the code, minus a couple of incidental details:

      // stash or retrieve an array of new prod ids
      $newest = $cache->getOrSet('newest', function () use () {
        $picks = StorefrontProductSaurus::finder()
          ->orderBy('products.products_date_available', 'DESC')
          ->limit(20);

        return $picks->map(function ($pick) {
          return $pick->getId();
        });
      });

      // pull some random storefront products out of our cached list:
      // of course array_rand() returns an array of keys, not values.
      $subset = array_rand($newest, $this->count);
      $products = StorefrontProductSaurus::findBy('products_id', array(
        $newest[ $subset[0] ],
        $newest[ $subset[1] ],
        $newest[ $subset[2] ],
      ));

        That can't be the code that makes up SparkFun! Its not awesome enough!!

        • Let me assure you that in general it is a many-layered concretion of dirty hacks, convoluted workarounds, and absurd leaps of faith.

            Oh that is funny. That effectively describes my entire application development career and I think I have done quite well at it. At least I have made a lot of clients happy anyway.
