MSP430 SMD IC

The Texas Instruments MSP430 family of ultralow-power microcontrollers consist of several devices featuring different sets of peripherals targeted for various applications. The architecture, combined with five low power modes is optimized to achieve extended battery life in portable measurement applications. The device features a powerful 16-bit RISC CPU, 16-bit registers, and constant generators that attribute to maximum code efficiency. The digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) allows wake-up from low-power modes to active mode in less than 6μs.

The MSP430x11x2 and MSP430x12x2 series are ultralow-power mixed signal microcontrollers with a built-in 16-bit timer, 10-bit A/D converter with integrated reference and data transfer controller (DTC) and fourteen or twenty-two I/O pins. In addition, the MSP430x12x2 series microcontrollers have built-in communication capability using asynchronous (UART) and synchronous (SPI) protocols.

Digital signal processing with the 16-bit RISC performance enables effective system solutions such as glass breakage detection with signal analysis (including wave digital filter algorithm). Another area of application is in stand-alone RF sensors.

Note: These are production stock that we no longer use in any assembly so we've decided to sell them here. Once we run out of stock, these are gone for good, so get 'em while you can!

MSP430 SMD IC Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

3 Soldering

Skill Level: Competent - You will encounter surface mount components and basic SMD soldering techniques are required.
See all skill levels

Core Skill: Programming

If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.

2 Programming

Skill Level: Rookie - You will need a better fundamental understand of what code is, and how it works. You will be using beginner-level software and development tools like Arduino. You will be dealing directly with code, but numerous examples and libraries are available. Sensors or shields will communicate with serial or TTL.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

3 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Competent - You will be required to reference a datasheet or schematic to know how to use a component. Your knowledge of a datasheet will only require basic features like power requirements, pinouts, or communications type. Also, you may need a power supply that?s greater than 12V or more than 1A worth of current.

Is this the SOIC or TSSOP package? I can see that it's the 28-pin version, but I'm not interested in taking a scale to that quarter to measure the pitch of those leads.

This IS a TSSOP package. refer to the device eratta sheet for package marking information all SOIC packages have the date code on the first line.

Also note that you will NOT be able to use a TI launchpad to program these devices, rater you will need to use a BSL or JTAG programer.

From the package marking looks to be SOIC

With regards to programmer, YES, you can program this (and all MSP430's) with the LaunchPad. You need the TEST, RST, GND, and VCC pins on the launchpad. That's it.

    • Greeeg / about 12 years ago / 1

No you cannot. Launchpad will only program newer devices that include the SBW (spy-bi-wire) connections. These older MSPs do not have this feature.

This is about $0.15 cheaper than buying the part in ones from major distributors.
