works quite well on bicycle dynamo
With 47 ohm resistor and two led in both polarizations. Keeps me quite visible at night and is much lighter pedaling.

yep, this thing is bright and excellent quality
Loving these in a custom fog light mod I did on my car. I'm using a LM317 as a current regulator to drive these bad boys off the 13.8 V from my car and that work great. I'm using 5 per side with 1" spacing and they do a pretty job at lighting up the road in front of me. Pictures here: http://store.axihub.ca/images/rose/lights/view.html

I plugged a few of these into a breadboard with some resistors. When I turned them on, it reminded me of the final scene from The Fifth Element. Yikes! These things are bright!
I am considering making a sunrise alarm clock. how bright are these compared to a regular 40 or 60W incandescent? Would that be sufficient to wake me up?

Sparkfun, would you please take another look at the data sheet for this. According to the attached data sheet these have a viewing angle of 20 degrees (not 30 as listed under the product information). Still a great LED though.
Do not be looking at these things when you turn them on, common sense should say that though, they are BRIGHT. 22Ω @ 5v works really well (optimal is 20Ω though, but those are not the most common suckers oh and 1/4 watt is all you need).
From the data sheet, I'm seeing 13k to 15k mcd.
16-20 candelas? NICE.
