Voltage Regulator - 5V SMD (strip of 10)

There are more and more hobbyists taking advantage of surface mount technology these days. With affordable tools like hot air and hotplate reflow ovens, electronics enthusiasts are shrinking their projects down to new levels of portability. Unfortunately, It's not always easy to get your hands on small amounts of SMD parts so here's a part that every project could use more of:

That's right, each pack includes 10 tiny SOT-23-5 5V LDO voltage regulators in cut-tape packaging. These are great for small, relatively low power applications, they appear on several of SparkFun's boards.

  • Ultra-low-noise output
  • Guaranteed 150mA output
  • Very low temperature coefficient

Voltage Regulator - 5V SMD (strip of 10) Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

3 Soldering

Skill Level: Competent - You will encounter surface mount components and basic SMD soldering techniques are required.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

2 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Rookie - You may be required to know a bit more about the component, such as orientation, or how to hook it up, in addition to power requirements. You will need to understand polarized components.

Usually these are offered in 10s because handling costs more than a single part and handling 1 part costs as much as handling 10 parts. But the price is no good. Mouser sell 10 parts for 45 cent each versus 90 cent here, a hundred parts cost 35 cents each at Mouser, here 80 cents.

True, this is one of those parts that we sell because we have them and people find it useful. If you need a lot it's going to be cheaper somewhere else. If you need a few and are already placing a Sparkfun order it is convenient and saves on shipping etc. We are not really setup well to cut tape and reel and sell it cheaply so mostly we leave that to the professionals.
