Coin Acceptor - Programmable (2 coin types)

Replacement:COM-11719. This coin acceptor unit has been discontinued, but we have a slightly spiffier 3-coin version. This page is for reference only.

Are you trying to make a quick dime from electronics? Why limit yourself to dimes? This coin acceptor will take two different kinds of coin! Whether you're building your own arcade cabinet or just charging admission to your house, this programmable coin acceptor makes it easy to monetize your next project.

The sensors in this coin acceptor use the thickness, diameter and fall time of the coins to identify them and it's fully programmable so you're not limited to any particular type of currency. Simply use the SET button and LEDs on the side of the unit to enter programming mode, insert a bunch of coin samples (or the same one, over and over) and you're good to go! After you've programmed the coin profiles, the coin acceptor will recognize them and report when each type is inserted, rejecting other coins.

This coin acceptor also has a coin inhibitor, so your controller can tell the coin acceptor not to take any more coins. All you need to get the coin acceptor working is a pocket full of change, a 12VDC supply and somewhere for the change to fall after it's accepted.

So maybe you won't get rich building your own vending machines but access control using different sizes of tokens might be cool, or even a virtual vending machine where you can buy MMORPG items. There are a ton of cool coin-operated projects just *waiting *to be built!

Oh can I have credit for pointing you guys to this device? I sent you an email a little over a year ago asking if you would carry it and got a reply that you would look into it. Great to see it here.

    • Thanks Tadpole! I've pinged the folks in SparkFun that nail down suppliers to see if we can hook you up.

Hi Nate. When I said I wanted credit I was thinking of an honorable mention in the credits, and actually just joking. I was so surprised to see the email from your company, and it really was such a nice gesture on your part to do that. Sparkfun really does stand out from all the other hobby-electronic companies on the web because there truely is a feeling of being genuinely appreciated by the company and its workers. I've been purchasing stuff from Sparkfun for many years, and have had only the best of experiences. On those rare occasions where something didn't work as it should, I have been able to get prompt, polite, and meaningful support - even hassle free exchanges. I want to say Sparkfun has that extra something that the others don't, and that is why I just love doing business with you folks. Keep up the good work!

        • :) I'm glad to hear we're doing good! Thanks again for recommending a cool widget.

I suggested metal foot push buttons once. Didn't hear back but sure enough, a couple months later they had them.

Man, I always wanted one of these when I was a little kid. Something about some mechanical coin system that was just plain cool.

I see a Raspberry Pi powered Spotify jukebox coming my way soon. Ordered!

Anyone know if they read polygonal coins?

This is the last bit I need to put in my order.

Building a Raspberry Pi based full size cabinet. I'm adding a coin collection portion so I can collect for charity.

I've already recompiled Maelstrom so that it has credits and such, I'm now working on Burgerspace. I'll probably release the source when I'm done.

I saw that the 6 coin acceptor just came back in stock; any ETA on these guys?

  • The Datasheet is atrocious, but I still want one! These things fascinated me as a kid!

    1. There is no inhibit input on this model
    2. Thought you can teach it 2 different coins, the output signals seem to be the same for each coin, even though the device recognises the different coins by flashing the LED associated with that coin.

Did you check the pulse width? That should be different.
