SparkFun Mini Inventor's Kit for Redboard

The SparkFun Mini Inventor's Kit (SMIK) is a great way to get started with programming and hardware interaction with the Arduino programming language. This mini SIK includes everything you need to complete 8 circuits that will teach you how to blink an LED, read sensors, drive servos, and more. You don't need any previous programming or electronics experience to use this kit.

The on-line SIK Digital Guide (in the Documents section below) contains step by step instructions of how to connect each circuit with the included parts. Full example code is provided and explained and even includes troubleshooting tips if something goes wrong.

The kit does not require any soldering and is recommended for beginners ages 10 and up. This miniature version of the SIK includes the first 8 experiments of our full sized SIK to make it cheaper and more practical for beginning and interested users.

  • Circuit 1: Blinking an LED
  • Circuit 2: Reading a Potentiometer
  • Circuit 3: Driving and RGB LED
  • Circuit 4: Driving Multiple LEDs
  • Circuit 5: Push Buttons
  • Circuit 6: Reading a Photo Resistor
  • Circuit 7: Reading a Temperature Sensor
  • Circuit 8: Driving a Servo Motor

SparkFun Mini Inventor's Kit for Redboard Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Robotics

This skill concerns mechanical and robotics knowledge. You may need to know how mechanical parts interact, how motors work, or how to use motor drivers and controllers.

1 Robotics

Skill Level: Noob - You will be required to put together a robotics kit. Necessary parts are included and steps will be easy to follow. You also might encounter basic robotics components like bearings, mounts, or other hardware and need a general idea of how it goes together.

Core Skill: Programming

If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.

2 Programming

Skill Level: Rookie - You will need a better fundamental understand of what code is, and how it works. You will be using beginner-level software and development tools like Arduino. You will be dealing directly with code, but numerous examples and libraries are available. Sensors or shields will communicate with serial or TTL.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

2 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Rookie - You may be required to know a bit more about the component, such as orientation, or how to hook it up, in addition to power requirements. You will need to understand polarized components.

A great value for me considering I was going to buy some of those parts separate before I found this. It's just a shame the didn't include their translucent red breadboard (looks WAY better) instead of the white one ;). Well, I can't complain with this good of value. I will just have to buy the red one separate. After all, it's only $5 more or something like that. Besides, it can't hurt to have an extra breadboard on hand, even if it doesn't look as good.

how much is total weight of the kit?

    • Kamiquasi / about 9 years ago / 1

While not necessarily an accurate net value the weight used for shipping calculations (can be found in the json/csv, top right corner of the page) suggests 0.7692lbs (~350g)

It works.

It starts up and I can plug things into it and it makes those things start up.

10/10.

great value for beginner

great value for a beginner in electronics. has lots of potential, a few buttons and such to start understanding how it all works. recommend it to first timers like myself. it was easy to get it up and going and to do the few sketches and hooking it up to sparkfun's accelerometer was a sinch

Most fun I have had learning programming

Great product, Great tech support, and a Great American Company

Great for Class

The Mini Inventor's kit is perfect for my Making Digital Lighting Controls class. This class is mostly focused on software. The kit has enough components for basic input and output which, along with an ethernet shield, is all that is needed for students to get hands on experience with various control protocols.

Great way to get started with Arduino

This is a great affordable kit to get started with Arduino, especially if you have some prototyping experience. The online tutorials available through Sparkfun are most excellent and made this super easy to use!
