RFID Reader Breakout

This is a simple breakout board for our RFID readers. This board will bring the 2mm spaced pins out to two 0.1" spaced headers. You can solder the reader directly to the breakout board or use our 2mm sockets.

Breakout board fits within and under the ID-12. The board also works with the ID-20, but is smaller than the edges of the ID-20.

Learn the basics of how to get started with the SparkFun RFID Starter Kit.

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

1 Soldering

Skill Level: Noob - Some basic soldering is required, but it is limited to a just a few pins, basic through-hole soldering, and couple (if any) polarized components. A basic soldering iron is all you should need.

Is there a footprint on eagle for this breakout board?

    • There is a footprint. It's a little hard to find because we're updating the breakout board but you can find the library here. We'll bring this footprint into the main branch once the new version of the product goes live.

This is really a must with the ID-12/ID-20 readers. You can solder in some headers and easily plug in to a bread board. I think I would also add this to a final design to make replacing the reader easy with some pin headers.

I ordered the Lantronix sockets listed below in related products with my ID-20 so I would have the option to replace the module easily if needed, but I didn't end up using them because they didn't hold the reader in. I think the pins on the reader were just a little too short to fit all the way into the sockets. I just soldered the reader right onto the breakout.
I also used right angle female header for the breakout, and wire it up to the breadboard. This allows for more versatility in positioning the reader while keeping other circuit elements organized.

Is this no longer available? I'm not seeing backorder or retired info.

When are you guys getting more of these?

Any chance somebody can let me know when this will be back in stock?

the headers that come with this board has been discontinued. I dont know why. SAD.

    • Sorry about the change without an explanation! The 2mm headers listed in related projects will work with the RFID readers, you just have to cut the 10pin 2mm female connectors to the size you need.

Hey All. I just bought this but it didn't come with headers. Would have been great if it had... Am I expected to solder the rfid sensor to the BO board directly or should I buy female headers too? if so which ones? Ideally I'd like to avoid soldering the sensor to the board.

Dumb question... I have to solder the pins myself in order to easily attach this to a breadboard.. doesn't skarkfun sell these pins?

  • jscoltock / about 12 years ago / 1

I purchased this for a project from the book Beginning Arduino. I want to do a simple project with my arduino and breadboard. I have no idea how to use this breakout board to help integrate the ID-12 with the arduino. I've never worked with this stuff before - I assume it's straight forward but I'm afraid I'll mess up the ID-12 if I do it wrong. There is talk of headers and sockets below but I still don't see how it all goes together. Any help would be appreciated.

This board is an absolute must for prototyping. I have two tips:

    1) Get some 2mm headers (see related items) so that you can remove the module if you need to.

    2) Solder your 0.1" headers in before the module (see above).

Doh! Learn from the mistakes of others. ;o)

At the time of this posting these breakout boards are out of stock. I have the ID-20 and need to get my project running soon. Any chance you could publish the eagle .brd file for this?

They worked fine for me<br />

these boards are an absolute lifesaver!
with some male headers on one side and some trimmed xbee sockets on the other, it's really useful for prototyping, too!

Will this work with an ID-2? I assume it will based on the video demonstrating the RFID USB Reader (The ID-2, ID-12, and ID-20 all appeared to fit the same sockets).

    • Hi,
Thanks for checking on this. Yeah, that will work with the ID-2. Are you familiar with making antennas? Just want to point out that the ID-2 requires a custom made antenna to work.

The picture is of an older version. On the new version, the sparkfun logo points in towards the ID-20, and the pin labels point "out" (away from the chip)

    • Moggie100 / about 14 years ago / 1

Confirmed - both for the header issue and the board orientation.

      • Yes there is a new version but we don't have pictures on the site yet. We will try and update the pictures to match the new board.

could i get the dimensions for the spacing between the headers?
