The Altera Compatible Programmer is Sparkfun's version of the Altera ByteBlaster Cable. There is a 25-pin D-Sub connector for a PC and a 10-pin interface to the FPGA.
Note: The programmer does not come with the 10-pin IDC cable.

for anyone without a lpt port, you know you can get PCI-express and PCI cards that add them...if you really need one for this.
Does anyone know if this will work with the Cyclone 3 family? Specifically the EP3C40 series?
It should. This is presumably a clone of the Altera ByteBlaster II or ByteBlaster MV, either one of which supports the Cyclone family I believe. Haven't tried it myself though.
Make sure you have access to a PC which actually has a real LPT port on it. Real LPT USB adapters are nigh impossible to find, if not non-existant; all adapters I have found are made to work only with a printer.
If you want to use this with a laptop and do not have the option of a native or PCMCIA LPT port, this seemingly cheap solution is not an option.
While the USB-Blaster from Altera is quite expensive at ($300) one of their Taiwanese partners (Terasic) offers their own clone for $50, with $36 shipping, or fromDigikey for $75 + tax and shipping.
Thanks for the LPT info. I don't think we have one computer left in our office that has one built in.
