The fan can be taken out if you have one. There are a series of buttons (I personally like the arcade style ones because they are large and don't wear out) on this site. I'd recommend picking at least four so that you can do things like adjust fan speeds, select options, heat settings, alarm settings, ect. The LCD screen will serve as your navigation screen to select options and integrate with the microcontroller (Arduino). You will also need 20 gauge solid wire, solder, and heat shrink.
