The primary responsibility of the Packager is to place completed board assemblies and loose components into protective packaging material for safe storage and transport.

Pay: $13.00 / hour

About the Department

This position will reside in The Board Assembly Team. The Board Assembly team is a subset of the Production Department. The Board Assembly team is responsible for the creation of over 200 unique PCB assemblies that are crucial to the sustenance of SparkFun's product offerings. The team is comprised of many unique individuals, each bringing their own set of skills and abilities. Quality, consistency, and efficiency are the driving metrics within The Board Assembly team.

SparkFun's Next Packager

The Packager is responsible for ensuring that in-house assembled PCB products are safe for transport and storage in the warehouse. They are the final step in the overall Board Assembly process. The Packager is also responsible for assembling Light Packaged Assemblies, which are things like buttons, switches, sensors, transmitters and receivers.

Working closely with all other members of The Board Assembly Team, the Packager will ensure that SparkFun built products are available for sale at all times, and replenished as quickly as possible when they run out.

The right candidate will have a strong attention to detail, being able to spot errors or potential errors quickly and take action to correct them. In addition, this ideal candidate will be able to take on repetitive tasks without losing focus or speed.

Essential Job Functions

Daily Workflow in Packaging

  • Use and properly maintain all packaging equipment
  • Acquire, maintain, and use in-depth knowledge of internal ERP system "Sparkle".
  • Verify counts for batches prior to completion
  • Vet time contributions & comments in Sparkle for individual batches prior to completion
  • Communicate with Board Assembly Technicians when contribution errors arise
  • Complete batches after packaging and making them pick ready for shipping, then deliver to Receiving
  • Track packing material consumption and trigger re-orders
  • Check email on a daily basis
  • Keep packaging area clean & organized
  • File inventory error reports & work with Warehouse when a discrepancy is identified
  • File bugs in Bugzilla with the appropriate departments when something breaks
  • Examples are Sparkle bugs or help desk bugs to IT

Manage & Package Bulk Components into Light Assemblies

  • Manage light assemblies, which include 3 or fewer items, that need to be packaged together
  • Break down original bulk packaging
  • Re-package components or light assemblies in new protective packaging for sale on Storefront
  • Items under this heading include batteries, conductive thread, etc.

Package SparkFun Manufactured Parts & Products

  • Receive all boards manufactured by our Board Assembly team
  • Assess the proper packaging requirements for each board
  • Package according to what is needed, most likely involving placing boards in ESD bags.
