Welcome to the Galactivation Station

The project above is the brain-child of SparkFun customer Brian. Aptly named "The Galactivation Station" (with the clever tagline, "Are you ready to get Galactivated?"), this installation is a 12' tall pyramid which translates your sweet dance moves into music, light, and color.

How does it do this? Well, it has four outwardly facing ultrasonic sensors which are linked into Arduino boards. The Arduino boards control some hacked synthesizers which create light effects that pulse in time with the sound. The result is the above video - pretty dang cool. Nice work Brian! • Nifty! Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop dropping acid!

  • Thanks for posting this SparkFun!! We are trying to raise the funds to get the Galactivation Station to the Burning Man Festival this year. We need to make a bunch of upgrades to make her be able to withstand the raging dust storms and blistering heat of the Playa. If you want to support or you want to get Galactivated at the Burn, check out our Kickstarter page (http://kck.st/cuLObL)

  • I recently experienced this in person at the Emrg-N-See festival. It is truly awesome, the audio is coming from all directions with raw chiptuney goodness. I felt very galactivated. Really awesome job, glad to see this on sparkfun homepage..

  • We’ve been working with Brian for some time; it’s been exciting to watch the Heart Car and Galactivation Station come together using ShiftBars and Shifty VU Shields from our product line as well as Sparkfun’s!
