This was among a whole exhibit on presidential motorcades that also included the limo Reagan was rushed into after he was shot in an assassination attempt. Surely that one had to have been cleaned too.

FIRST FRC teams are always looking for part suppliers. Some part specifications are critical such as pneumatics. Other parts are not as critical. You can get some sense of this form last years documentation.
I know the team I mentor had no idea about arduinos and the variety and number DIYer in microprocessor land. Some of my team has started to play with arduinos after I showed them your site. So some FIRST association can be very good for business.
See you in NYC...

As for the heavier solenoids or pneumatic pistons... I found this 36V/15psi unit in our catalog but that doesn't quite stack up to what you're talking about. At any rate it's up to the parts hunter to find it and engineering to vet it. I'll pass along your mention and get it on their radar.

Hydraulics are not allowed in FRC due to the potential to spill oil all over the place.
That being said, if you were to start carrying 24-volt solenoids for a working pressure of 60 PSI or pneumatic pistons that are cheaper than all the gear Bimba sells, you might make some friends in FRC.

I'm glad to see people working on this. A couple of us went to Jason Scott's Archive Team talk at DEFCON. Pretty inspiring stuff.

But I'm glad you guys had a blast!

I3Detroit has actually been pretty quiet since the Faire as people take a breather, but things are ramping up again, and we've got a few events coming up that any Detroit-area readers here might be interested in.
Soonest, on the 20th, is a Kryoflux floppy-disk archiving party. It's too late for many floppies (see http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/3191 for details), but we're gonna do what we can to preserve what we can, with the coolest tool ever made for the job.
Of broader interest to those under age 30 is probably the Android meetup, on the 23rd. Users and hackers alike are invited to do, well, whatever! My noobly self will be there taking another stab at upgrading this infernal Galaxy Tab...
A bunch of us are headed out to Maker Faire New York, so we'll be seeing you again soon!
