The Pololu high-power motor driver is a compact carrier for the VNH3SP30 motor driver integrated circuits from ST. The board incorporates most of the components of the typical application diagram on page 8 of the VNH2SP30 datasheet, including pull-up and current-limiting resistors and a FET for reverse battery protection. All you need to add is a microcontroller or other control circuit to turn the H-Bridge on and off.

    Be careful when mounting this controller. 2 of the mounting holes are tied to a motor lead NOT ground. So if you mount to a conductive surface that surface will have the full voltage of the power source on it in some running cases. If you are using two of these controllers it won't let them work independently. So make sure to electrically isolate them in your mounting scheme.

    Any idea what the output of pin 9 (CS) does? According to the spec sheet the VNH2... has this listed as NC. Is this an undocumented current feedback?

      The CS pin on this board doesn't do anything (the VNH3SP30 does not have current sense feedback), but the VNH2SP30 version of this board does have a functional CS pin. The two motor driver ICs have the same package and pin-out (the VNH2SP30 just has some pins that are not used on the VNH3SP30), so the same PCB is used for the two motor driver carriers.

    I am sure I the answer is emphatically YES but let me ask anyway: Should I shield the motor outputs against kickback or is this already accounted for in the circuit in some way that isn't obvious?

      Sorry. Answered my own question. I missed the little diodes in the block diagram of the output stage. The kickback control is on board.
