Robotics Kit - BOX3.0

Replacement: None. These are no longer made, however, if you still have an itch for robotics check out our robotics category. This page is for reference only.

This is an intelligent robotics kit, which helps you build a number of different, fully automatic robots. This kit is suitable for lower and higher education students, or anyone interested in microcontroller applications.

Included with this kit are instructions to build a number of robots; including line-followers, sumo-bots, light-chasers, and bumper based robots.

The brain is a compact, programmable microcontroller. Programming your robot is very easy. Beginners can start with the graphical based, iconic software called LOGO BLOCKS or use Text based programming in Cricket Logo. A CDROM with all the necessary software is included.

    Doesn't last...
After 8 months the controller is no longer able to communicate with the host computer...any host computer. Disappointing because the kids were just starting to get the hang of programming it.
Fortunately an Arduino can be neatly fitted to the chassis. A BOE fits also, but not quite so nicely. I also hacked out a PICAXE arrangement. In any case, you'll need to build a pair of H-bridges or otherwise figure out how to drive the motors...something I'm still learning about.
The components in the kit are nice, including a set of Tamiya tank treads, two pairs of gear motors and two different chassis platforms. There are enough fasteners and extra components that you can build two working robots as long as you have an extra "brain".
The sensors can be hacked to interface with other MCUs. I've tried them with Arduino, Basic Stamp, and a PICAXE 08M.
The kids and I learned a lot from this kit, but I'm disappointed with the short life of the MCU and if I'd known then what I know now, I'd've bought a BOE-BOT instead.
