Fingerprint Slide Scanner

Replacement: None. Sadly, this product has become obsolete which means it's time for it to step aside and make way for newer, cooler stuff in the catalog. This page is for reference only.

This is a low-cost finger print scanner with a slide type sensor where the user slides their finger over the scanner. The ARA-ME-01 uses a simple serial interface that makes identifying users by their finger print fast and easy. This scanner is capable of gathering and storing unique finger prints. Simply hold your finger on the optical scanner, query the device over serial, and you will be issued a unique ID. Use that ID within your embedded system to determine access levels, time clocks, door locks, etc.

Unit includes scanning element and control board. We are trying to get pigtail interface cables made but in the interim, you will need to create your own connection to the serial connector.

  • 9600bps TTL serial interface
  • 5V@60mA supply
  • 256*288 sensor resolution
  • Memory for 120 fingerprints

I'm working on a driver in C language for PIC16 microcontrollers for this device, I have a working beta but needs some additional testing and improvement.

Once I have it more reliable, I'll be posting the download links right here.

Hi Raul, I'm interested on interfacing This finger print sensor with pic. Do you have any sample to share? Like basic operation. TQ

Hi Member #... Great, finally someone with good news. Im looking for a fingerprint sensor easy to use with a PIC also. Can you tell me if this is the right one, could you share your communication protocol to see how complex it is ? Thanks man... Rod

You can find details about the devices's communication protocol in the datasheet (download link above) and if you go to the forum discussion (link posted above by nz-kman) you'll find communication packet examples posted by other users; I posted some notes about enrolling and verifying procedures also.

Thanks raul. I read the other post, so now im much more clear about the operation of this sensor and the communication. Ill be waiting for any news. Thans again Rod

  • I am facing few porblems the documentation does not contain enough information about the Packet structure (Device address) ,(Packet length,Parameter 1 to n) if someone can suggest and if some example is avaliable how to send packet and complete data sheet . Waiting for your reply thanks in advance .

Is there any updated information on this product? I feel like this is a dead end and NO one has gotten it to work... any sample code will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

What are the dimensions of this product?
    lengthXwidthXthickness?

  • I already got one of this, and is very nice and easy to use. The documentation is not what I expected, but someone in the sparkfun forums share with me a test PC software that made easy to understand how it works.

We got one fingerprint scanner and trying with that. Can I have the PC software. I hope this will help us to do things better.

Has anyone succeeded in integrating this into a design? The somewhat scarce documents for this product make me hesitant to use it. I really like the concept and I'm excited to use it, but I don't want to get stuck with a sensor I can't communicate with.

  • Hi there,
We're currently trying to get the right command set from the manufacturer. As soon as we get it, it will get posted here. Very sorry for the trouble.

Hmmm. The documentation link for the serial interface seems to link back to this product page. Could you guys check on it please? Thanks. =)
