  • Question about parallel crystals.

I have a transceiver circuit that uses a pair of crystals in parallel. Each crystal is switched in or out via a DPDT switch, thus leaving the unused crystal completely isolated from the circuit. My question is why must the unused crystal be completely isolated? Why can't one leg of each be soldered together and the other legs be switched with a SPDT switch? I see the isolation way everywhere I look but never see the common leg system anywhere.
