Forgive my ignorance, but does the fact that the RFM12B includes a balun mean that the RFM12b should be used with a 1/4-wave whip with a ground plane (which has an impedance around 50 ohms) rather than a dipole consisting of two 1/4-wave lines end-to-end (which has an impedance of around 300 ohms)?. I've done a tiny bit of testing which seems to suggest that a dipole does perform a little better than a 1/4-wave whip with ground plane, but this is just very preliminary testing.
