stacking three of these in parallel with different ranges looks like it would do a pretty good job of balancing the noise from one and getting much larger accurate range.

Suggest you use improved Wire.h which doe snot die when comms are lost: http://dsscircuits.com/articles/arduino-i2c-master-library.html
This is probably because the Wire.h lib is not up to it (drops in comms and if you need double start messages). I suggest you replace with this lib instead for all i2c comms: http://dsscircuits.com/articles/arduino-i2c-master-library.html
How caome NEWS isn't linked from the Sparkfun banner page anymore. You have to follow link to "sparkfun IRC channel" and then click "News" at the top to find it ??
