  • The protection circuit does exactly what you said -- prevents overcharge, overdischarge and short-circuit. If your own charge-management is guaranteed not to do any of the above, you will be fine.
    Keep in mind that charging these batteries in series can lead to overcharging. (8.4V total does not necessarily mean 4.2V each)

  • It's interesting that they're rated 110mAh in the picture.

  • NO problem. This is a standard LCD 6:6:6 interface... There are lots of drivers and microcontrollers that can drive it, including most of the drivers related to HD66790. Or, if you want to make your own, go for it.
    Now that I've put my foot in my mouth, I'll let you know how my own attempt goes.
