    Clear box would be really bad idea since the light source would be the sun and that would obviously cause the temperature sensor to not give accurate results.

    This is the same transceiver JeeNodes use so if you are arduino based there is already code available to get this working right away. JeeNodes sold in the US use the 915MHz however but the code is the same. See http://news.jeelabs.org/docs/rf12.html for lots of good info and code.

    For those trying to compare to other barometric pressure sensors, 1 hPa a 100 Pa. So the resolution is 3 Pa, and range 30 kPa to 110 kPa. The SCP1000 has a resolution of 2 Pa with range of 30 kPa to 110 kPa.

    I’ve ordered these from here in September and they were the DS18B20’s. They are actually labeled on the face of the IC but you’ll have to use a magnifying glass and strong light to read it to verify what you have. A brief description of the differences between versions: The DS18B20’s have 12 bit resolution capabilties. The original DS1820’s (note lack of B or S) have 9 bit resolution. The DS18S20 (note S) was meant as a drop-in replacement for the original DS1820. It gets a 12 bit temp value but rounds it to a 9 bit value. You CAN however get 12 bit resolution with the DS18S20’s but it requires extra calculations/reading of registers to be done that the DS18B20’s don’t require. The DS18B20’s also allow you to specify 9, 10, 11, or 12 bit resolution programmatically. Taking 9 bit values takes less time and power.

    You can find the sensor without the breakout board for half the price but a lot of people don’t have the means to use SMD parts. If you want to start making your own PCB’s to make your own breakout boards or entire boards I would suggest looking into a product called PCB FAB-In-A-Box which runs about $150. Then you can make your own fairly easily.

    The top-of-the-line magnifier to use while soldering is probably a Luxo Wave+Plus Magnifier which DigiKey and Mouser both sell. Its a rectangular illuminated lens on adjustable arm with no distortion across the entire glass areas unlike the cheap ones you see on Amazon and such. Unfortunately these things run around $400-$500 :p

    Did you guys price Apple Xserves? Anytime I’ve done a comparison the Xserves have come out considerably cheaper and/or more bang for your buck compared to the Dell server offerings.
