  • Just a quick comment, on the last bulb pcb picture : “The backside is more sparse than the other two ballasts, but contains similar parts. The bridge rectifier is the MMB6U (no datasheet found). Many more tantalum caps.” if you are referring to the two terminal packages, they are label D1, D2, D3, etc, most likely diodes, tantalum seem too expensive of a material for a low cost applications like this, (although they use some Mylar caps, probably for critical timing accuracy/stability)

    Thanks again Nate, I’ve been wanting to do a post mortem on some of those, I am still waiting for the mortem part….(i.e., for a unit to fail to have at it….)

  • It is not mentioned here, but you need a walwart of “A supply voltage of [VREG (typical) + 0.3V] to 6V is recommended”. (from Page 11 of the MCP73831T datasheet) There is a schottky diode in series with the barrel jack connector so, in this case, the voltage range for the walwart is [VREG(typical) +.5V] to 6.2V, (assuming Diode Vf = .2V).

  • I bought the previous version and commented about the HV regulation and the Geiger tube output signal processing . I would like to retrofit my older version to this one, any idea when the revised schematic will be posted?

    Also, I did not checked the posted firmware, is it the current one?

  • On the Digital Output section of your tutorial, doesn’t the addition of a 4.7uF cap at the output of Q4 really blocks the detection of additional pulses?

    The scope waveform shows multiple pulses occurring on a 100 ms division. If you can only output one pulse every 5 or six tube pulses….

  • So, if I understand correctly, you do not need to have the actual LabView program, that’s where the LabView Student edition DVD’s come into play?
