It's a typo, in the specs below (and user manual) it says "Approximately 60 minutes with alkaline batteries and 120 minutes with nickel-metal hydride"
Not sure if they're waterproof, but what about a surface transducer on the outside of the bucket?

Hey man, I feel you there! I just graduated HS, i'm in Electronics Engineering in college (freakin' awesome by the way). The way I look at is is half the fun is designing things on a budget, makes you work all that much harder but you also get that much more experience.
Pretty much any metal object could be used as a heatsink, I remember seeing someone use a beer bottle cap as a stand in for a heatsink.
