Environmental Otological Research Device.beta.v01 (EORD.beta.v01) Tim Eads & Austen Brown

EORD.beta.v01 will be used at Bartram’s Garden to seek a unique perspective on the historical site. Natural sounds will be kinetically driven by sculpture, processed and sampled, and triggered by natural occurrences. Two megaphone-like objects will be placed in various locations in the Garden. They will project the collected sounds within a given pitch class towards a receiving station.

The receiving station will collect the projected sounds and amplify them. Participants will be able rotate the parabolic microphones at the receiving station allowing them to choose their preferred collection of sound and pitch. In addition, the rotation will adjust the MXL90316 sensor to expand or narrow the range of pitches being projected by each megaphone.

The sounds timbre will be largely dependent on the natural source, favoring short durations that dissipate into the given soundscape. The electronic manipulation will be primarily pitch, duration, and time, aiming to exaggerate what is often unheard.

How the components will be used: All of the components play a critical role in making this project possible. The motors and sensors will be used in the Garden to acquire sounds that will be fed into the megaphone speakers via microphones. The receiving tower is a 14 foot high structure with two high-end parabolic microphones that the viewer will be allowed to rotate to pick up various sounds. Sensors will cause additional distortions that will feed into the Arduino boards. Max/MSP will be used to distort this information before sending it to speakers. This chain of events will happen instantly. LEDs and EL will be used to light up the receiving tower and megaphones.
