A small kit for experimenting with arduino. Resistors, 20 LEDs, buzzer, small breadboard, jumper wires, 10k pot for dimming LEDs or experimenting with analog measurements, and enough transistors to build a couple different kinds of logic gates, if you'd like to try building them in hardware instead of writing some code.
Couple with a TI launchpad or some third party arduino clone for a cheap microcontroller experimentation kit under $40.
