In honor of the 10-year anniversary of the LilyPad product line, we decided to spend some time building a robust Halloween costume using LilyPad products. Over the past few weeks I have been laboring over the Night Sky Halloween costume, and I am very excited to share it with you today.

The Night Sky Halloween costume features almost 200 LilyPad LEDs sewn into 10 separate circuits. Each is powered with two coin cell batteries and includes a LilyTiny to add a twinkling effect to the LEDs. The LEDs are placed in pattern to represent actual constellations in the night sky.

The cape looks absolutely majestic during the day, but at night it truly comes to life with its bright twinkling LEDs. Plus, with a heavy denim lining, it will keep you warm even on the coldest of Halloween (or winter) nights. To make your own, visit the step-by-step tutorial! The full cape is designed for our advanced and expert e-sewers, but this project can be easily scaled down, making it less time-consuming and more suitable for all levels.

This cape is a good example of using electronics as an integral design element. The LEDs are a crucial part of the costume, and while there are many inside, they are subtle and maintain an elegant visual effect. Often times, adding LEDs to a thing can feel gimmicky, but in this case they perfectly suit the objects they represent.
