Enclosure - Aluminum (112x60x31mm)

These beefy aluminum enclosures may look rough, but they're built tough. This 2mm-thick, die-cast enclosure is rated IP54 against dust and splashing water. Because it's aluminum, it's easy to cut and drill so that you can add LCD screens, buttons and cable connections. If you want to "pretty up" your project, hit this with some fine-grit sand paper and buff it or just spray paint it!

These enclosures were originally sold for the production of "stomp box" style effects pedals. Try combining this with our stomp switches (in the related items below) and some of your own secret sauce circuitry to build a sweet custom pedal.

The lid mates nicely to the top of the enclosure and is secured with 10mm long M3 screws (included).

Has anybody used this as a capacitive touch sensor electrode?

How much does this thing weigh? I was planning on making a stove and I need a strong and light enclosure.

    • Kamiquasi / about 9 years ago / 1

While it's not guaranteed to be accurate in any way, the site API suggests that the weight as used for calculating shipping costs is: 0.2754lbs / 125g
From measuring pixels, doing some modeling, and plugging the results into an online calculator for 2669 Al, I got about 115g. Just a naive calculation given the measurements in the description I get 121.52g. So expect it to be somewhere in that neighborhood at least.
If you need an accurate measurement, best to contact tech support and see if they can get somebody to grab one and drop it onto a scale :)

would the 28 pin socket(PRT-09175) fit within this with enough room for a proto board and a chip?

Are the dimensions 112x60x31mm external dimensions of the case?

Could an XBee transmit through this or would the faraday cage action block it?

    • Datalink / about 10 years ago / 2

Any time you encase an RF transmitter in a shell of conductive material, you will form a Faraday Cage, I suggest getting an XBee with an external antenna, and drilling a hole for the antenna mount to go through this case. I would suggest using an XBee with uFL antenna, a UFL to SMA adapter cable and various SMA antennas that'd work well for various XBee related projects, as that'd let you just drill a hole where practical and place the XBee where practical..

Do you think you could receive a GPS signal through, or would that need an external antenna as well?

        Alright thanks.

Awesome Price

What is not to like? This box takes a beating but can be cut and drilled with ease. There are so many ABS boxes out there that are much more expensive and of course weaker. Unless you are worried about RF propagation or have some aversion to metal then this is a great enclosure at a killer price. I have not seen a better deal anywhere including DigiKey, Mouser, Adafruit or Amazon.
