Starter Kit for Arduino - Flex (Old-School)

Replacement:DEV-09952. This kit has been replaced with a newer version. The new version includes a better trimpot.

The Arduino Starter Kit is a great raw parts re-fill for beginners and weathered professionals alike. Included is a multitude of inputs, outputs, and sensors to get your workbench back up to par. If you're just getting started with Arduino, we recommend the Arduino Inventor's Kit that comes with a printed manual.

Included:

  • Arduino Duemilanove ATmega328 - the latest Arduino USB board, fully assembled and tested.
  • 6' USB A to B cable - USB provides power for up to 500mA (enough for most projects) and is ample length to connect to your desktop or laptop USB port.
  • Miniature breadboard - Excellent for making circuits and connections off the Arduino. Breadboard may come in various colors.
  • Male to Male jumper wires - These are high quality wires that allow you to connect the female headers on the Arduino to the components and breadboard.
  • Flex Sensor - Originally designed for the Nintendo Power Glove, now you too can measure flex!
  • SoftPot - Measure position along the softpot by looking at the change in resistance. It's like a touch sensitive volume slider.
  • Photocell - A sensor to detect ambient light. Perfect for detecting when a drawer is opened or when night-time approaches.
  • Thermistor - A sensor for detecting ambient temperature and temperature changes.
  • Tri-Color LED - Because everyone loves a blinky. Use this LED to PWM mix any color you need.
  • Basic LEDs - Light emitting diodes make great general indicators.
  • Linear trim pot - Also known as a variable resistor, this is a device commonly used to control volume, contrast, and makes a great general user control input.
  • Buzzer - Make wonderful, brain splitting noises, alarms, and possibly music!
  • 12mm button - Because big buttons are easier to hit.
  • 330 Ohm Resistors - 5 current limiting resistors for LEDs, and strong pull-up resistors.
  • 10k Ohm Resistors - These make excellent pull-ups, pull-downs, and current limiters.

12mm button does not seem sized to fit mini-breadboard. If one pair of pins are in, pushing the other pair in causes first pair to pop out, as if too close together on button. Or if I try bending pins to span another row, pins won't seat all the way/are too short.

    • Hi,
These buttons are not perfectly square, they are intended to sit in a bread board one way, it will work allot better if oriented correctly. If you are plugging it in correctly, these buttons can sometimes pop out still. They are not really intended for permanent bread boarding. They work great in soldered prototyping boards and other more permanent applications. If you plan on using this with a breadboard long term you might solder headers to the legs so they plug into the breadboard more completely.
      Thanks,
      Tim

I ordered another 10 flexible jumpers, and I'm glad I did, because I've used almost all 20 before.
Like the previous comment said, the button doesn't fit perfectly, but I get it to stay with a bit of easing. The potentiometer has the same problem as the button. On the potentiometer I had to clip off the metal anchors to fit on the breadboard better.
I wish in the description it would point to the exact LED's that are sent in the kit so it wouldn't take a lot of time to find the current and voltage draw for them.
The Tri-Color LED is a great part in this kit. I've had lots of fun with it. But since the red pin has a lower voltage draw, I think the kit should should include some resistors to accommodate for that fact.
I haven't used any of the sensors in an actual application, but I've played around with all of them, and they seem to work fine.
The arduino software & drivers installed perfectly. All the parts work great; definitely top notch. The board works just like it should too.
Definitely a great starter kit if you're just getting into this stuff.
