Evaluate proximity sensor which outputs TTL RS232. Input this to the FT232R and read sensor data on laptop serial terminal. (mac driver support)
There's no Xbee plugged in at this stage. Use the DOUT pin to access the FT232R RX pin. This module can then be reused in phase II with the receiving Xbee. The USB Xbee explorer provides a 3.3v regulated output (500 mA) which can conveniently power the proximity sensor.
