This is a SMD non-isolated dc-dc converter that can deliver up to 6A of output current. These modules provide precisely regulated output voltage programmable via external resistor and capacitor from 0.59Vdc to 5.5Vdc over a wide range of input voltage (VIN = 4.5 - 14V). Their open-frame construction and small footprint enable designers to develop cost- and space-efficient solutions. Standard features include remote On/Off, programmable output voltage and overcurrent protection.

  • ~94% efficiency at 12v -> 5v = nice!
    Pins instead of solder pads would be nice though, especially at 0.1" spacing. I’m using some 2 amp DC-DC converters for a LED array and the pins are a little off (I have to drill out the protoboard a bit).

  • How am i going to solder this (i just ordered a heatgun too btw)

  • Using one in a car, handles the 12-14V well and spits out a steady 5.13V all the time, even during cranking. I do draw less than 1.5 amps from it though.

  • It burned out after a month. It either can’t handle 12V-3.3V for a digicam or it’s too fragile to use in a helicopter. When it went, it destroyed the camera & SD card.

    • Mine burned out going to 3.3 as well, not happy wasting $25 thinking that this would be the ideal power regulator.

    • Is the heli electric or glow?
      If its electric, then you’ll probably find the ESC puts out a fair amount of noise and transients. It could be that the input stage didn’t like this very much, some protection may have been needed (e.g. transient supressors, filters etc)

    • I like TI’s PTN78020/78060 switching regulator better. We use it power Macbooks(16.5V) and all other electronics on our robot. Never have any problems.

  • It does work. It gets hot when converting 12V to 3.3V for a digicam, so no shrink wrapping. It’s designed to be soldered on a board like a BGA, with airflow under the inductor. It needs odd resistors to determine the output voltage & can’t use resistor dividers like the LM317. Sparkfun doesn’t have the odd resistors, but other places do, in addition to having the DC-DC converter.
