SparkFun is looking to add a Senior Systems Administrator to oversee the design, maintenance and operation of our systems infrastructure.

Pay: $90,000 - $110,000 / year

Shift: M-F 9-5 with Flexibility

About the Department

SparkFun's Software Development and Information Technology department is responsible for the continuous development of all SparkFun web properties and internal tools. This includes all public web properties (e-commerce, forums) and SparkFun’s custom-built ERP system, which manages website content, order processing, customer management, inventory controls and manufacturing operations.

The department focuses on team collaboration and success, utilizing an Agile Scrum methodology to develop and deploy functionality in a highly cooperative, communicative and transparent manner.

SparkFun's Next Senior Systems Administrator

The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining the uptime, performance and security of all critical SparkFun systems. This includes all external systems and web properties (www.sparkfun.com), and internal systems that run our day-to-day company operations.

This role will coordinate projects, collaborate on development and the deployment of system updates. Following an Agile development methodology, the ideal candidate identifies systems needs and works closely with fellow team members as well as all departments within the organization as needed.

Essential Job Functions

  • Design, deploy and maintain the infrastructure for SparkFun’s internal and external systems.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and response for systems using monitoring and alerting tools.
  • Lead system troubleshooting efforts: identify issues, develop corrective actions and deploy fixes.
  • Provide long-term upgrade planning to maintain system stability and security
  • Ensure system/project status is current and reflected in associated project management tools.
  • Provides guidance, coaching and technical leadership to other team members.
  • Participates in 24x7 on-call rotation with other team members
  • Develop and ensure ongoing disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Develop and deploy proactive security measures.

Required Qualifications

  • Expert proficiency administering Linux-based systems
  • Expert proficiency in network design and topology, administration and routing
  • Experience and knowledge of cloud-based infrastructures such as AWS – including system design patterns, operational considerations and system cost analysis.
  • Experience with enterprise configuration management software used to support cloud deployment and management.
  • Experience in administering common enterprise systems, including relational databases, caching systems and NoSQL data stores.
  • Experience in the deployment and operation of common system services (i.e. DHCP, DNS, LDAP, SNMP…etc).
  • Experience with wireless technologies and managing enterprise-wide Wi-Fi deployments.
  • Experience with modern software configuration management tools and methodologies
  • 5+ years of systems design and operation experience
  • A “Team First” attitude, putting team needs ahead of individual tasks
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience with server configuration version control systems like Salt
  • Familiarity with Agile Scrum methodologies
  • Proficiency with scripting tools and languages (sh/bash, Python, Perl)
  • Knowledge of network-based resource caching technologies and services
