SparkFun is looking to add a Software Development Manager to help lead, manage, and monitor all internal software development activities within the company.

Pay: $95,000 - $115,000 / year

Shift: M-F 8:30-5 Full Time with some flexibility

About the Department

SparkFun's Software Development and Information Technology department is responsible for the continuous development of all SparkFun web properties and internal tools. This includes all public web properties (our e-commerce presence – www.sparkfun.com, our revolutionary A La Carte application – alc.sparkfun.com ) and SparkFun’s custom-built ERP system, which manages order processing, customer management, inventory controls and manufacturing operations.

The department focuses on team collaboration and success, utilizing an Agile Scrum methodology to develop and deploy functionality in a highly cooperative, communicative, and transparent manner.

About SparkFun's Next Software Development Manager

The Software Development Manager is a critical role within SparkFun, facilitating the creation, communication and realization of our systems that run our e-commerce platform, production operations and our new A La’ Carte application.

Leading a team of technical professionals, the Software Development Manager is responsible for all team management duties including staffing, employee development, mentoring, and team interactions.

The Software Development Manager is a member of SparkFun’s Technology Group, reporting to the CTO.

The right candidate collaboratively works a variety of internal customers, guiding their inputs and interaction throughout the entire software development lifecycle. By facilitating the creation and management of user needs, the elaboration and prioritization of work, and successful user acceptance testing, the Software Development Manager ensures development and delivery of the desired user functionality.


  • Manage the Software Development team personnel and operations
  • Manage and oversee the Software Development process for our internal software projects
  • Meet with internal customers and facilitate the creation of requirements and user stories 

  • Facilitate the elaboration of customer requirements into development user stories and acceptance tests 

  • Ensure project status is current and reflected in associated Agile management tools 

  • Ensure continuous process improvement as part the normal process lifecycle 

  • Coordinate software needs with systems infrastructure capabilities and planning efforts
  • Manage a small systems infrastructure team that supports the software team, cloud infrastructure and headquarters network.
  • Fill a leadership position within the SparkFun Technical Group, and participate in the company-wide strategy planning efforts

  • Mentor software developers, project managers and internal software project participants

Required Qualifications

  • Expert knowledge of the Agile Scrum development methodology and proven experience managing scrum projects and teams
  • Strong understanding of websites and web-based applications, including architectural patterns and operational flow

  • Experience with user-centric software development and requirement elaboration
  • Familiarity with web-focused technologies, service architectures and modern database technologies
  • Experience with commercial e-commerce platforms
  • Experience with cloud-based IT infrastructure design, deployment, use patterns and methodologies
  • 4+ years of successful team/project leadership experience
  • Excellent organizational and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication, coaching and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of software configuration management
  • Familiarity with Agile Scrum software development management tools
  • Familiarity with modern enterprise systems, including CRM, ERP and Customer Support deployments
  • Familiarity in a Linux/Unix-based environment
