Magic Blue Smoke Refilling Kit

Note: This was one of our April Fool's products for 2011. Sadly, it's not real.

On a recent trip to South America I made a shocking discovery. Deep in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, our team came across a rare vegetative moss. The spores of this ancient plant proved to be quite useful to us. Through specialized process, we were able to carefully extract the dust from the spores and refine them into a very fine powder. Through a serendipitous accident in our research labs, a bit of this powder was let out into the air. The plume traveled across the lab and came into contact with some broken equipment we had piled in the corner. Like magic, the equipment came to life and was revived.

We toiled day and night to find the best way to harness this awesome power. Through a proprietary procedure using our inverse tetra-grammatron phase inductance focusing screen (TGPIFS for short), we were able to easily resurrect any IC reliably. Simply place the phase ring of the TGPIFS directly over your IC, inject your smoke, and you're done!

This kit comes with a single TGPIFS, an applicator pre-filled with spore powder and is capable of resurrecting approximately 20 ICs (depending on size, complexity, and damage).

Note: Please use in a well-ventilated areas as the fumes may be harmful.

  • 12v, 150A input for TGPIFS
  • Applicator good for roughly 20 ICs
  • Kit designed for SMD or PTH
  • Disposable applicator

What did this retail for 7 years ago? I would like to know since I have plans for a Kickstarter similar to this.

My hamster recently died. Will this work on him?

  • Valen / about 13 years ago / 3

Have you guys tried this on TQFP packages too. It might fix those fake AVR chips too.

  • Member #20773 / about 13 years ago / 3

I dunno - those clip leads look pretty thin for 150A.

    • bzerk / about 13 years ago / 1

Intended to be used with a certain 1996 hit single from The Prodigy playing in the background.

  • dammitcoetzee / about 13 years ago / 3

What were you trying to do with the fine powder BEFORE you discovered it was magic smoke... magic smoke... oh. I see.

  • EvilGenius121 / about 13 years ago / 2

Ill bet that they used magical unicorn tears as a catalyst for the spores, as well as a preservative...

  • Earlz / about 13 years ago / 2

I'm looking to automate this process with an Arduino, XBee, some servos, and other related cool items. Could I order a drum of magic smoke? Also, can you make a 5V tolerant IO version?

  • Is this compatible with ARM processors? I only ask because I picked up the blue smoke kit from DigiKey, but theirs doesn't support ARM.

    • bzerk / about 13 years ago / 2

I've heard rumors that Olimex is working on one that's compatible with OpenOCD.

  • KeithW / about 13 years ago / 2

When will these be back in stock? ;-)

  • tinkertoy / about 13 years ago / 2

What color of smoke refill do I need if the TGPIFS itself blows up?

  • bzerk / about 13 years ago / 2

I already have an inverse tetragrammatron phase inductance focusing screen and 1800w power supply. Will you be offering the smoke applicator separately?

  • BB / about 13 years ago / 2

What a markup! You can get this for about 2/3rds the price from DealExtreme. What are we paying for, the logo?

  • DaveAK / about 13 years ago / 2

When I let out the magic smoke from an ADC chip last week it also blew off one of the pins. Will this product help a new pin to grow in place of the missing one, or should I just use some scotch tape and a paperclip to replace it?

  • StandardRockets / about 13 years ago / 2

This could not have been more timely. A co-worker mentioned he fried a motherboard chipset in the lab. This will fit the bill! The price is right too!

  • ThinkerT / about 13 years ago / 2

How perfect! I just blew a chip on Thursday, so now on April 1, I can purchase this revolutionary technology and revive my masterpiece!
    I'll take 7!

If I want to refill SOT-23 transistors, how many of them will I be able to fill with a single kit?

  • EvilGenius121 / about 13 years ago / 1

Does this come in a version for black smoke as well??

  • EZ$ / about 13 years ago * / 1

Despite all you wish. You can never get the Genie back in the box. We all have tried. Good April fools joke. I had to take a second look.
Just remember every time you see the blue smoke Genie pop out make a wish. I always forget to. For some reason all that comes to mind is a four letter word.
So I will add this to my wish list.

What is this? A psycological experiment or something? Be careful, some people may take this seriously! Or at least that's what it seems if you read some of the comments!

  • Digisynth / about 13 years ago / 1

After one day already sold out!

  • Digisynth / about 13 years ago / 1

Can this also revive my dead goldfish?

  • WKUadam / about 13 years ago / 1

is that 12V DC or AC?

    • MYX / about 13 years ago / 1

Also, can I use it with a solar panel when the moon is out? If so, what happens to the blue smoke on a blue moon? Is it extra blue? What happens if I inhale?

  • Scrubb / about 13 years ago / 1

I think you can purchase the magic smoke refill kit separately from any "medicinal" shop in California. Shipping may be limited though and I've heard growing your own kit is frowned on in some states.

  • astinsan / about 13 years ago / 1

    Haha... spores.. classic

  • LyleG / about 13 years ago / 1

Are you sure that this doesn't need 1.21 gigawatts to do it's job.

    • bzerk / about 13 years ago / 1

      It's jiggawatts.

      • Lelo / about 13 years ago / 1

Gigawatts is actually pronounced "jiggawatts" except nobody does. The movie just used it before the term was in popular use.

Their Geiger counters will come in handy when they need to power up the Flux Capacitor with Uranium.

  • SomeGuy123 / about 13 years ago / 1

    Datasheet please.

  • ThinkerT / about 13 years ago / 1

Can you guys post a tutorial for this?

  • Member #6748 / about 13 years ago / 1

I buyed one of this and It's not working. Do you have to blow in order for the smoke to get into the IC? That would be a problem, I don't like to blow. It reminds me DWI tests.

    • check the specs for the TGPIFS. You will need to supply at least 150A to get it to reabsorb the smoke correctly.

  • TimCole / about 13 years ago / 1

Now this is annoying. I've been trying to replace black smoke for years. Besides, I'll bet the replacement blue smoke isn't even ozone friendly. Sheesh....

  • khearn / about 13 years ago / 1

Do you sell refills for the powder? I'm not buying it if I have to buy a whole new kit every time I run out of powder.

  • jakkjakk / about 13 years ago / 1

How can it be RoHS complaint when it doesn't exist?

  • froggydude / about 13 years ago / 1

what happens when you fry this one?

  • lastcoolnameleft / about 13 years ago / 1

I think you got the Black Smoke from LOST instead.

  • BernardRoth / about 13 years ago / 1

Could you post a link to the MSDS for the spore powder? :)
