New to e-textiles? LilyPad is a wearable technology originally developed by Dr. Leah Buechley and co-developed with SparkFun. Every single component in this ecosystem was specifically engineered for textiles. Using LilyPad components is a great way to experiment with electronics through the lenses of fashion design, crafting, fabric arts, and more. 

Instead of traditional wire and soldering irons, you will use conductive thread to connect components. The rounded shape of LilyPad components makes them easy to sew and minimizes snagging on fabric or thread.

  • Interactive Projects: Learn how to sew basic circuits to light up LEDs and control them with tactile buttons and switches.
  • Pre-Programmed Reactions: Experiment with a specialized LilyMini circuit that automatically reacts to ambient light levels right out of the box.
  • ProtoSnap Exploration: The kit includes two LilyPad ProtoSnap boards, allowing you to test and understand your circuit layouts on a single, pre-wired board before you snap the pieces apart and sew them into your fabric.

Washable Design

Because wearables are meant to be worn, the boards and conductive thread are completely washable once your project is finished. If your project gets dirty, remove the battery and carefully hand-wash it with mild detergent. Let your project air-dry, as a dryer can damage the LilyPad pieces or stitching.

Project 1: Glowing Pin

  • Understand the flow of a basic electrical circuit.

  • Plan and arrange electronic components on a fabric canvas.

  • Sew functional electrical traces using specialized conductive thread.

  • Assemble, test, and troubleshoot the wearable circuit.

In Project 1, you will create a wearable pin using conductive thread to connect a LilyPad LED to a battery holder. Follow along by drawing your own design on a piece of fabric, or download and print one of SparkFun’s designs.

Project 2: Illuminated Mask

  • Explore the concept of parallel circuits.

  • Use a two-part felt template to plan the layout.

  • Stitch a continuous positive conductive thread trace.

  • Securely finish an e-textile accessory.

For Project 2, you'll use multiple LEDs in a circuit to create an illuminated mask. Rather than stitching just one LED to the battery holder (like in Project 1), you’ll use a parallel circuit to connect all of the LEDs to the battery.


Project 3: Light-Up Plush

  • Plan and arrange a multi-component circuit.

  • Sew complex conductive thread traces.

  • Assemble the final creature.

For Project 3, you'll try individually controlling the LEDs in an e-textile circuit. You’ll explore two ways of controlling the flow of current to an LED using a button and a switch while we craft a creative plush creature.

Project 4: Night-Light Pennant

  • Understand the role of a microcontroller.

  • Identify how an input component gathers environmental data.

  • Sew a complex multi-component circuit.

In Project 4, you’ll control LEDs using the LilyMini ProtoSnap. With the code stored on the LilyMini, your projects can now have more advanced behaviors. You'll sew the LilyPad components on a pennant shape and customize the theme and decoration.
