Product Overview
The SparkFun ESP32-P4 & ESP32-C5 IoT RedBoard is a high-performance development board designed for demanding edge computing and human-machine interfacing (HMI) applications. By pairing the processing power of Espressif's ESP32-P4 with the wireless networking of the ESP32-C5 WROOM module, this RedBoard provides a foundation for custom touch displays, camera integration, and advanced IoT projects that require reliable security features.
Next-Generation Processing and Memory
At the heart of the board lies the ESP32-P4NRW32X (or P4X), an upgraded dual-core RISC-V processor running at up to 400MHz for intensive tasks like image and voice processing. The P4X also includes an integrated low-power RISC-V core that runs at up to 40MHz for standby operations, and brings advanced memory subsystems directly to your workbench. Best of all, it boasts 32MB of PSRAM, Direct Memory Access (DMA) controllers, and AI instruction extensions to handle massive datasets without bogging down the system!
Dedicated Wireless Subsystem
While the P4X handles the heavy computing, we've included an ESP32-C5 WROOM module dedicated to take care of all your networking needs. The ESP32-C5 provides dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi, Bluetooth™ 5 (LE), Zigbee, and Thread networks. It features an IEEE standard 802.15.4 subsystem to support modern smart home and IoT software stacks. The ESP32-C5's primary use on this board is network connectivity but the board does also include a 0.1"-spaced serial header connected to the C5 to access the chip's UART interface for reprogramming. This header matches the pinout of the Serial Basic, so you can easily connect it over USB.
I/O Options and High-Speed Peripherals
This IoT RedBoard comes packed with peripheral connection options, including 16MB of onboard Flash memory and a µSD card port to expand the board's storage even further! You'll have plenty of options when it comes to getting your hardware connected:
- Advanced Multimedia: Tap directly into the ESP32-P4's high-speed MIPI interfaces via two dedicated ribbon connectors for native camera and display integration.
- Wired Connections: Includes a Qwiic connector for solderless I2C expansion, plus two USB-C ports; one dedicated to high-speed OTG USB and one for USB serial/JTAG.
- Interface Options: Breaks out six analog I/O pins and 16 digital I/O pins, with dual-purpose support for UART, SPI, I2C, I3C, and TWAI™ interfaces, plus analog signal-processing capabilities.
- Battery Management: A 2-pin JST connector lets you run the board off a LiPo battery, with onboard charging and monitoring circuits.
Designed for multi-platform use right out of the box, the board comes completely pre-programmed with MicroPython firmware. Whether you are coding in Python or working natively with the Espressif IDF, this board gives you a top-tier development experience for your next smart home, robotics, or edge AI project.
