Getting started with RFID doesn't have to involve hunting down compatible modules and wiring up complex circuits. The SparkFun RFID Starter Kit is an all-in-one bundle that provides everything you need to get your scanning or security project off the ground right away! The module will handle all complex RF decoding internally, so your microcontroller only needs to listen for incoming serial data from the included RFID USB Reader.
Plug, Scan, and Read
At the heart of this kit is the ID-12LA from ID Innovations, one of our favorite 125kHz RFID reader modules! To make data retrieval effortless, we paired it directly with the SparkFun RFID USB Reader, a plug-and-play USB-to-serial base unit equipped with an FTDI232RL converter.
Setting up your scanning station takes only a few simple steps:
- Plug the ID-12LA module directly into the pre-soldered 2mm headers on the USB reader board.
- Attach the board to your computer using a standard mini-B USB cable.
- Open your preferred terminal program at 9600bps 8N1.
- Scan one of the two included 125kHz RFID cards, and the unique 32-bit ID will populate on your screen as a clean serial string.
Feedback and Customization
The USB base unit will also provide you with physical feedback during operation. It features an onboard LED and a magnetic buzzer that provide immediate visual and audio confirmation of a successful scan. If your project requires a stealthier approach or silent operation, you can disable the audio feedback by clearing the solder bridge on the BUZZ jumper.
